On the Waterfront, by Budd Schulberg (MG1) - Immortalised on screen by the great Marlon Brando ('I coulda been a contender') this movie adaptation of this classic novel made Oscar history reaping awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor in a Leading Role.

The Harder they Fall, by Budd Schulberg (MG2) Another Schulberg classic, crowded with unforgettable characters and a relentless exposé of the fight racket, which was made into a memorable movie featuring Humphrey Bogart as the down-on-his-luck sportswriter.

Little Children, by Tom Perrotta (MG3) Little Children sees a group of parents, trapped in middle-class stability, dealing with marriage, kids and their suburban life in very different ways... Poignant, funny and touchingly human, the film received much acclaim, starring Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly and Patrick Wilson.

Thank You For Smoking, by Christopher Buckley (MG4) - This brilliant, clever and laugh-out-loud satirical comedy, revolving around a spokesman for Big Tobacco, got everyone talking about the world of lobbying. It was made into a major Hollywood motion picture with an all-star cast including Aaron Eckhart, Rob Lowe, William H Macy (Fargo) and Katie Holmes.

Alfie, by Bill Naughton (MG5) - This all-time-classic novel became an all-time-classic movie following Sir Michael Caine's brilliant performance as the ultimate womaniser, Alfie, and hit cinemas twice with a more recent remake starring Jude Law.

Get Carter by Ted Lewis (MG6) A gritty, violent novel that also starred Sir Michael Caine as the anti-hero Jack Carter - a film that his become something of a cult classic.

And on a side note, if The Great Gatsby leaves you wanting a momentary glimpse into the life of famed writer F.  Scott Fitzgerald, check out The Disenchanted, by Budd Schulberg...
